LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – President Donald Trump is floating the idea of the federal government stepping in to run the 2026 election in Detroit, saying Motown, Philadelphia, and Atlanta have “horrible corruption on elections, and the federal government should not allow that.”
Governor Gretchen Whitmer shot back, saying any attempt by the federal government to take over elections in Michigan “won’t happen on my watch.”
She says Michigan’s elections remain safe and secure, despite Trump’s ongoing claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him in the state.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson added the Constitution is not a partisan issue and said Trump’s “baseless attacks rehashing an election that happened six years ago are designed to suppress voter turnout and sow distrust.”
Republican Kent County Clerk Lisa Posthumus Lyons agreed with Whitmer and Benson, saying “elections in the United States are administered by the states, not the federal government, and there is no authority, short of amending the constitution, by which they may be nationalize.” She went on to say the constitutional division of authority between states and the federal government “is essential to maintaining election integrity and public confidence.”
However, Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt says he is all for a federal takeover of the 2026 election in Michigan.
The Van Buren County Republican says President Trump is “100% right because Michigan voters cannot trust Jocelyn Benson,” referencing the Secretary of State who is the Democratic frontrunner in the race for governor.
Nesbitt says she is “the worst Secretary of State in America and shouldn’t be running our elections without checks and balances.”
Trump continues to claim the 2020 presidential election in Michigan, which he lost to Joe Biden, was stolen from him.
