FRUITPORT TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 25, 2026) – More information has come forth as Michigan State Police troopers are investigating a fatal shooting near Fruitport on Saturday evening.
According to a statement from the state police post in Grand Rapids, Fruitport Township Police were called to a residence off of Romedius Street, in a subdivision south of Broadway Avenue, around 7:20 PM. Officers found a 14-year-old boy who was dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound. No names or circumstances which led to the incident were immediately disclosed.
In the statement, troopers said that, “Due to affiliations between the victim’s family and Fruitport Township, the investigation was turned over to the Michigan State Police. Fruitport Township Police will continue to assist as requested.”
On Sunday, Fruitport Community Schools Superintendent Jason Kennedy identified the victim as Rylen Yager, an eight-grade student who had attended Fruitport Middle School.
“Rylen’s presence brought light and joy to many. Known for a huge smile and a wonderful sense of humor, Rylen had a way of making others feel welcome and valued. With many friends and a heart of gold, Rylen was kind, compassionate, and always willing to connect with those around him. Rylen left a lasting impression on our school community, and he will be remembered fondly and missed dearly.” – Fruitport Community Schools Superintendent Jason Kennedy.
Members of the district’s Emotional Support Team will be on hand at the school on Monday for students, teachers and staff. No further details as to the ongoing investigation have been disclosed.
