GEORGETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 17, 2026) – Wintry weather is believed to be the reason for I-196 being closed off between Grandville and Hudsonville during the overnight hours of Saturday.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Alex DeJong, there were numerous slide offs and crashes around the midnight hour, coming from both directions of the freeway, between the exits to M-6 and 44th Street. The most serious of these incidents occurred when an eastbound sedan collided with was was believed to be a white-colored pickup, causing the car to veer off of the roadway and overturn. That driver, a 29-year-old Wyoming man, had to be extricated by rescuers and was taken to an “area hospital” for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, while the truck drove off before first responders arrived. It took an hour for crews to address the situation and reopen the expressway.
In addition, two semi car haulers also slid off of westbound I-196 in that same area, blocking the direction of that roadway for a couple of hours. DeJong said that this incident was not related to the overturned sedan crash.
All of the Friday night/Saturday morning crashes remain under investigation.
