SAUGATUCK TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 29, 2025) – Wintry weather conditions apparently has led to a traffic snarl that could last for some time near Saugatuck.
According to Allegan County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ross Mysliwiec, a northbound semi on I-196 at Old Allegan Road apparently lost control on the icy roadway around 7 AM on Monday, went off of the overpass, landed on the road below, and burst into flames. When first responders came upon the scene, passerby who had stopped as the incident occurred had already pulled a single, unnamed trucker out of the cab. He was taken to an undisclosed “local hospital” for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, while crews were able to bring the blaze under control.
Northbound I-196 traffic was diverted off at the Douglas exit and detoured through the Douglas/Saugatuck area to reenter the freeway at exit 41 north of Saugatuck, while southbound traffic was unaffected. The closure was expected to be lengthy due to the weather conditions, as well as a mandatory inspection of the bridge’s integrity by state Department of Transportation staffers as a result of the incident.
