OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 10, 2025) – A structural change to housing oversight in Ottawa County could be coming.
During Tuesday’s meeting of the county board’s Planning and Policy Committee, the members discussed a proposal to “reformulate” the county’s Housing Commission from its current five member, five-year term setup to that of 19 members, serving staggered three-year terms.
The commission serves as an advisory board, and Holland Democrat Doug Zylstra, who joined with fellow County Commissioner Josh Brugger of Grand Haven in drafting the proposal, believes the changes would make the panel stronger, more representative, and more responsive to address challenges in housing costs, workforce shortages, and increased demand in diverse housing types.
The committee voiced approval of the plan, and the full Housing Commission should consider these changes at its next scheduled meeting on January 8th.
