Matthew Scott Gerig, age 50, of West Olive, Michigan, passed away on December 4, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on May 28, 1975, Matt brought compassion, humor, and resilience to every chapter of his life.
He is survived by his devoted parents, Doyle and Linda Gerig; his brothers Grant (Michelle) Gerig and Todd (Tammy) Gerig; and his sister Jo Ellen (Dave) Strey. Matt was a deeply proud and loving uncle who treasured every moment with his nieces and nephews: Addyson and Easton Gerig; Gillian, Natalie, and Sophia Gerig; Olivia, Logan, Claire, Mason, Rae, and Lucy Strey; as well as Tara Bartee. Their lives were brighter because of his presence, encouragement, and unwavering affection.
In 1996, a car accident left Matt paralyzed—an event that dramatically changed the course of his life but never dimmed his spirit. Despite the physical challenges and ongoing health issues he faced, Matt refused to let adversity define him. His positivity, courage, and deep love for his family and close friends became a source of strength for everyone around him. He had a remarkable ability to bring people together, offering warmth, perspective, and a sense of gratitude that inspired all who knew him.
Matt was also a passionate sports fan who found tremendous joy in following his favorite teams. He rarely missed a chance to cheer on the Indiana Hoosiers, and his love for Manchester City ran deep—celebrating every victory and riding out every nail-biting match with enthusiasm. Sports were more than a pastime for Matt; they were a source of connection, excitement, and camaraderie that he shared with those around him.
Matt’s life was a testament to resilience, loyalty, and the power of connection. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched with his kindness, humor, and quiet determination.
He will be profoundly missed and forever loved.
