ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 17, 2025) – It should be an eventful Zeeland City Council meeting on Monday evening.
Besides being the final business session for retiring Mayor Kevin Klynstra, as well as for outgoing councilmen Jim Broersma and Glenn Kass, the governing panel has a number of issues to discuss and vote upon.
Up for a second and final reading is an ordinance amendment that would allow establishments with valid liquor licenses to sell alcohol by the glass or bottle from 12 Noon on Sundays to 2 AM on Mondays. This would allow those establishments to compete with those in neighboring communities. Also up for a second and final reading is an adjustment of the city’s Social District rules to include, in the current zone, Elm Street Park and the Vande Luyster Square.
Up for a first reading are proposed hikes in Zeeland BPW rates of 1.5 percent for electricity customers and 4.9 percent for water/sewer customers. The municipal utility says that the increases are needed to maintain current levels of service. If approved by council, a second reading in two weeks would be the final decision on the matter.
The BPW is also asking Council to approve participation in the Michigan Public Power Agency’s Commercial and Industrial Demand Response Project. This would enable commercial and industrial customers to be compensated for voluntarily reducing electricity demand during emergencies on the grid.
Also before the governing panel is a request to approve amendments in the shared agreement with the Huntington Bank branch off of Elm Street for parking spaces. The changes would increase the number of long-term parking spots for downtown employees and residents from 40 to 60 spaces, and the city would agree to haul off snow piles that the bank would create while clearing out the parking lot during winter storms.
Finally, city staff wishes to install security cameras along the Main Avenue corridor downtown. The Town and Country Group’s bid, one of six submitted to the city, is not the lowest, but the $18,737 price tag, with just over three thousand dollars extra for contingency, is believed to be the best value for the city in providing three-block coverage.
There is a 5:30 PM work-study session for the Zeeland City Council prior to the 7 PM business meeting, with both in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). There will be cake and refreshments afterwards to thank Broersma and Kass for their service. An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
