UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 13, 2025) – There have been two separate developments on the issue of short term rentals along the Lakeshore.
On Wednesday evening, the Laketown Township Board of Trustees approved a recommendation by the entity’s Planning Commission to extend a moratorium on new applications for free-standing STR. Such a prohibition was put into place this past May, while a special joint committee met four times to discuss the matter.
The biggest issues appeared to be noise, traffic, improper commercial use of property in residential zones, and proper enforcement of rules. Planners agreed that more time is needed to come up with solutions that would be agreeable to all parties involved. The moratorium is now extended to June 30th, but can be lifted earlier if an enforcement plan is in place before then.
Meanwhile, a leader of the group Park Township Neighbors told WXMI-TV on Wednesday that he and around 100 other property owners will appeal a 20th Circuit Court ruling last week that the municipality’s Zoning Board of Appeals was within its right to prohibit short term rental use of property in residential districts. The ruling kept in place a decision to prohibit STR’s created after 1974. The group not only will appeal the decision by Judge Jon Hulsing in state courts, but also plan a federal lawsuit against the township, claiming unconstitutional ambiguity.
