ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 29, 2025) – With federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program funding slated to end on Saturday, it’s “all hands to the pumps” for those entities who aim to help the needy have food on the table.
On Tuesday, the Heart of West Michigan United Way, which serves Allegan, Kent and Ottawa counties, announced the launch of a “United Response Fund” initiative, which would provide emergency financial support to local food pantries and meal programs, helping them meet an expected surge in demand.
While supporting the United Way effort, Stephanie Calhoun, President and CEO of the Allegan County Community Foundation, is also having her organization swing into action.
Officials from 25 states, including Michigan, and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Trump Administration, asking that SNAP funding be extended into November. The President, currently on an Asian trip, told reporters on Wednesday that “we’re going to get it done” on maintaining such funding, but offered no specifics.
