MACKINAC ISLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 19, 2025) – It’ll be “Elephants on Parade” at Mackinac Island this weekend.
Politicians and not tourists will be swarming in and around a sold-out Grand Hotel as the Michigan Republican Party’s Mackinac Leadership Conference begins its three-day run on Friday. With statewide elections in just over a year, it’s a chance for those vying for high profile positions to put their best foot forward in getting media coverage, as well as political and financial support.
Among those on Mackinac Island is state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt of Lawton, who was the first to announce his candidacy for governor in January.
National GOP figures will also be in attendance, highlighted by US Department of Homeland Security director Kristi Noem, who will need an armored vehicle motorcade to get her from the docks to the hotel. It’s the second time in the last decade that the Island’s city council approved allowing cars and trucks, other than emergency vehicles, on the island, after a similar motorcade for then-Vice President Mike Pence’s visit six years ago.
