SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 25, 2025) – The Saugatuck City Council has its biweekly business meeting on tap for Monday night, but what will go on behind closed doors may be the biggest item on the agenda.
The state’s Open Meetings Act allows public entities to conduct some business outside of the public eye, when it comes to personnel matters, property purchases, or legal situations. Such is the case with the latter, as council members are slated to huddle with the city’s attorney concerning two ongoing lawsuits filed by developer Dune Ridge.
The differences go back over four years, when the city entered into a land swap with Dune Ridge, and the developer promptly moored four vacant floating homes. The city claims it violated its Floating Home Ordinance, while the developer countered that the ordinance infringed upon the land swap agreement.
The 48th Circuit Court in Allegan ruled in favor of the city, and the state Court of Appeals upheld that decision this past June. It was not immediately known if Dune Ridge was planning to take the matter to the state Supreme Court.
The Saugatuck City Council’s meeting begins at 6:30 PM on the second floor of Saugatuck City Hall (102 Butler St.), with the closed door session near the end of the proceedings. An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
