GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 12, 2025) – In the wake of recent violent incidents at Walmart stores in Michigan, it wasn’t surprising that Gavin Love had the proverbial book thrown at him on Monday.
The 25-year-old Grand Haven man was given the maximum sentence 20th Circuit Court Judge Jon Hulsing could give when he was ordered to serve from between 34 months and 10 years in prison. Love had pled guilty last month to a count of malicious destruction of property, from between a thousand to 20 thousand dollars, as well as being a third-time habitual offender.
Love had been out on probation for five days when, on March 21st, he stepped into the retail store on Holland’s North Side and began pulling televisions from the shelves, destroying them in the process. He then purportedly grabbed a metal pole and started striking at items on the shelves, smashing glass doors on display cases and coolers, until deputies were able to bring him under control and take him into custody. No customers or employees were injured or threatened during the incident.
Love had been held on $50,000 bond since his arraignment.
In the past three weeks, 11 persons were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City, while a 23-year-old man was also stabbed at a Walmart, this time in Comstock Park. Suspects in both unrelated incidents have been arrested and are facing charges.
