SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 11, 2025) – Addressing a growing issue with deer is among the items before the Saugatuck City Council on Monday evening.
During its biweekly business meeting, the governing panel is being asked to “update” an existing ordinance that currently “prohibits the discharge of any firearms or archery equipment within City limits except with a permit from the city council, which an exception only for law enforcement officers acting pursuant to their official duties.” The update would add the exception for approved deer culls from the city, the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, and other “applicable local and state agencies.”
While the city hasn’t decided whether to allow such a cull, with the rut season approaching this fall, changing this ordinance would help accommodate such a decision if it is made. Deer control was among the issues brought up by a Tri-Community Wildlife Management Committee created by members of Saugatuck, Douglas and Saugatuck Township.
This ordinance amendment would also allow council to decide in the future whether to allow archery in areas that have appropriate safe space.
The Saugatuck City Council’s 6:30 PM business session is in the second-floor meeting room of Saugatuck City Hall (102 Butler St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
