UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 6, 2025) – There are a couple of public transportation notes coming out of Allegan County this week.
The first is from Laketown Township, where a trial run of the Interurban bus service coming out of the Saugatuck/Douglas area is in its fourth month. Municipal officials say that ridership levels were steady during the months of May and June, with 833 and 832 persons getting a ride, respectively. Popular stops included Sand Castle Estates, the Creekwood Area, and the Shangrai-La Mobile Home Park, with destinations of Douglas Elementary School, Saugatuck Junior/Senior High School, downtown shopping districts in Saugatuck and Douglas, and Oval Beach. The trial period is slated to run through Halloween, with the township paying the Interurban $7 per ride, but it only budgeted $20,000 for the effort.
Meanwhile, a public celebration of 25 years with Allegan County Transportation is slated for 3-5 PM on Friday afternoon at the public transportation agency’s headquarters (750 Airway Dr., Allegan). Staffers from the state Department of Transportation will be on hand to commemorate the occasion, citing the service’s consistent performance, innovation in rural transit solution, and commitment to excellence in customer service.
