Jane Ann Fairbanks was born in Holland, Michigan, to Bernard and Beatrice Shashaguay. One of six siblings—Tom, Mary Jo, Sally, Paul, and Peter—Jane grew up in a lively and caring household. She married her high school sweetheart, Menno Fairbanks, and they shared 58 years together.
Jane is survived by her son Paul, daughter Marianne, daughter-in-law Kim, son-in-law Anthony, and granddaughters Ani, Kai, and Ada. She was preceded in death by her husband Menno, her granddaughter Maya, and her sister Sally.
Most recently, Jane resided at Resthaven Nursing Home memory care unit and had been living with Alzheimer’s for the last ten years.
Known affectionately as Janie, she was a joyful spirit who moved through life with warmth and laughter. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, caregiver, and friend—an independent and hardworking woman who brought light to all she embraced.
Jane studied chemistry at Minot State University and worked for 30 years as a Medical Technologist at Holland Hospital that contributed to the care and well-being of thousands of patients. After retiring, she and Menno ran the Ship-n-Shore, followed by the River Market and Suites in Saugatuck, continuing their shared passion for community and hospitality.
Jane had a gift for bringing people together—organizing beach outings, family picnics, camping and ski trips, and festive gatherings. Her creativity turned ordinary moments into magic: from gingerbread houses complete with candy ponds to her whimsical cheese-ball igloo surrounded by penguin-shaped olives, Jane’s touch made everything feel special.
She also gave generously of her time and talents. Alongside her sisters, family, and church community, she helped make pigs in a blanket for fundraisers—supporting school trips and church causes with love and dedication. Jane also enjoyed teaching Sunday school at First United Methodist church for over ten years.
Jane was one of the most thoughtful and caring people you could ever meet. Her patience was boundless, and her presence was unique in a world full of distractions. Whether blowing bubbles in the bathtub, building Lego towers, or crafting drip castles at the beach, she gave her grandchildren the most precious gift of all: her time and undivided attention.
A visitation will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025 from 4-6pm at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home
315 E 16th St, Holland, MI 49423.
