OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jul. 25, 2025) – Instead of late book return fees, libraries in Ottawa County are getting some financial help from speeding motorists.
On Thursday, County Treasurer Cheryl Clark announced that over $680,000 were distributed in 2024 to nine public library systems from a portion of fines paid from criminal violations and civil infractions, much of which came from citations for exceeding the speed limit on area roads. This amount has ranged from $700,000 to $900,000 annually since the program was instituted through the state constitution of 1963.
The Holland area’s Herrick District Library received the most money from this program last year at more than $202,000, based in part from having the highest population base in its jurisdiction. Zeeland’s Howard Miller Library received over $60,000, while other top earners in 2024 were Georgetown Township ($124,000), Loutit in Grand Haven ($90,000) and Allendale ($81,000).
