HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jul. 1, 2025) – A long-time Hope College professor and former WHTC sportscaster has died.
John Van Iwaarden succumbed at his Florida home on Friday at the age of 89. The Holland native graduated from Hope in 1957, returning to the school four years later to begin four decades of teaching in mathematics, computer science and physics before his retirement. He chaired the math department during his tenure, and was Hope’s faculty rep for both the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
He worked alongside Ron Weatherby and Ray Backus on WHTC’s Hope College football and basketball broadcasts for over 20 years. He was also a fast pitch softball player for more than 40 years, including a stint as a professional on the East Coast. Away from the school, Mr. Van Iwaarden was active in community leadership, with stints on the Holland and Park townships’ planning commission, as well as the Park Township Board of Trustees.
He is survived by his wife, Donna, along with six children, a stepson, his sister Hazel, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation is set for next Thursday, July 10th, from 4-6 PM at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home (315 E. 16th St.), with an 11 AM service of remembrance and celebration on Friday, July 11th, at Christ Memorial Church (595 Graafschap Rd.). Mr. Van Iwaarden will be buried at Pilgrim Home Cemetery, adjacent to Hope College.
