FILLMORE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 27, 2025) – A fiery crash during the Friday afternoon commute southeast of Holland snarled traffic on I-196 and sent a motorist to the hospital with serious injuries.
First responders were dispatched to southbound I-196, between mile markers 51 and 52, east of the Lincoln Road (M-40) exit, shortly before 4 PM on a report of a vehicle that was ablaze. An off-duty officer at the scene was able to pull the motorist out of the vehicle by the time crews arrived, and the unnamed, undescribed driver was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment of burns to the lower legs.
An initial investigation revealed that the motorist apparently suffered a medical emergency that led to losing control of the vehicle. It drifted to the left, went off of the roadway, struck a tree, and caught fire. No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no responders were injured in bringing the blaze under control.
In order to clear out the situation, which was compounded by ongoing construction work on the freeway bridges over the Pere Marquette train line, southbound I-196 was blocked off at the Adams Street exit for some time. The incident remains under investigation.
