ALLENDALE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 24, 2025) – When the majority of students return to the campuses of Grand Valley State University in August, those who are charged with their safety will have a new leader at the helm.
The Allendale-based school of higher education announced on Monday that Daniel Lindstrom will became the new Director of Public Safety and Police Chief. Coming east from Los Angeles, where he served as the assistant special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s office, he will oversee safety operations and planning at all of GVSU’s campus sites.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School, with a education doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University, Lindstrom spent two decades in various roles with the FBI, including a stint as a campus security program manager, where he developed regulatory compliance measures for campus safety practices, as well as leading threat mitigation efforts, for 3,000 higher education institutions nationwide.
Lindstrom beat out Dave Oslund of Michigan State and Jeff Lillard of Western Michigan, the other two finalists interviewed earlier this month, to replace Brandon DeHaan, who retired in March. Captain Leah Heaton has been handling the department leadership duties on an interim basis.
