HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jun. 20, 2025) – Summer is coming in as a lion along the Lakeshore.
The National Weather Service is issuing a Extreme Heat Watch for the region this weekend, initially from 8 AM Saturday through 8 PM on Tuesday. Staffers at the weather service office off of Ford Airport in Grand Rapids say apparent temperatures will hover around 100, and little relief will be found at night, with lows only falling to the mid to upper 70s.
Holland’s Gateway Mission will establish emergency cooling centers at its men’s center off of West 7th Street and River Avenue, and its women and children’s complex off of Fairbanks Avenue. These oasis will be open daily from 8AM to 8 PM, beginning at 12 Noon on Saturday, and could be extended beyond Monday if conditions warrant. Those wishing lodging at these centers will also be accommodated.
Other buildings noted by the Ottawa County Emergency Management Unit that will be providing cooling times:
- Herrick District Library’s River Avenue branch (Sat. 9 AM-6 PM; Sun. 1-6 PM; Mon. & Tue. 9 AM-9 PM)
- Community Action House Food Club/Opportunity Hub off of Paw Paw Dr. (Sat. 10 AM-2 PM; Mon. 9 AM-5 PM; Tue. 12:30-7 PM)
- First United Methodist Church Refresh off of W. 10th St. (Tue. 8-11 AM)
- Public buildings in Grand Haven during normal working hours.
Meanwhile, some may want to open up fire hydrants for youngsters to run across for cooling off. Holland Fire Marshal Bret Groendyke takes a dim view on that.
Neighborhood groups wishing a scheduled visit from a Holland Fire Truck to cool down youngsters are asked to contact the department (616-355-1020).
