ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 28, 2025) – There have been inroads made to address Michigan’s housing shortage, but the task is far from done.
On Tuesday, the state Housing Development Authority announced that nearly 22,000 homes have been added over the past year, but that an analysis of US Census data showed that Michigan is still short some 119,000 homes.
Along the Lakeshore, Ottawa County housing officials are expected to announce shortly that housing stock is still around 10,000 under what is needed, while Chris Kleinjans and the Allegan County Community Foundation held a housing summit last month to go over how to address some 6,200 homes needed there.
Last week, the Housing Development Authority Board approved the first of six Employer-Assisted Housing Fund grants, totaling more than $5 million, with more investment announcements expected during this week’s Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island.
