ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 28, 2025) – There were some anxious moments involving Zeeland Public Schools late on Wednesday morning.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Detective Captain Jake Sparks, deputies were dispatched to the area of 96th Avenue and Riley Street around 11:35 AM on several reports of a man pointing a firearm at people and vehicles in that vicinity. That is near the location of Zeeland’s two high schools, and Zeeland Public Schools went on “secure” mode, restricting access into and out of all of the district’s buildings, while the search for this man was being made.
About 95 minutes later, the person was spotted at an undisclosed location, and deputies were able to talk with him about this matter. It was determined that those initial reports were “unfounded,” according to Sparks, and “no criminal activity is believed to have occurred.” The school district lifted the “secure” precautions and resumed normal operations.
