ROCKVILLE, MD (WHTC-AM/FM, May 16, 2025) – Efforts to thwart the planned restart of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant continue.
On Thursday, a three-judge panel at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s national headquarters in suburban Washington heard new and amended contentions by five activist groups, seeking to halt a proposed fall reboot of the facility near Covert. An earlier attempt by these groups, along with some local residents, was rejected by a 2-1 vote on March 31st, and the new effort centered on allegations that the NRC failed to do a strong enough environment review of the site, and that its conclusions of no significant impact wasn’t made in a timely, transparent matter.
These groups’ efforts, claiming that Palisades still isn’t safe to restart or to operate, are misguided, according to state House Democrat Joey Andrews of St. Joseph.
Andrews has joined with House Republican Pauline Wendzel of Coloma in supporting state legislation that, in part, would establish research and development tax credits for spurring innovation in small modular reactor technology that is being used at Palisades.
No immediate decision was made by the NRC panel, and no timetable for when such a decision would be forthcoming was disclosed.
