TALLMADGE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 15, 2025) – A 21-year-old Sparta man is free on bond after an arraignment this week on charges stemming from a dispute in Allendale that turned violent.
Riley James Leary faces felonious assault and a carrying a concealed weapon counts after he and an unnamed 17-year-old boy, also from Sparta, were arrested last Friday by deputies from both the Ottawa County and Kent County sheriff’s offices.
On Saturday, May 3rd, authorities were called to a residence off of Becker Drive, in the Enclave Apartments complex off of Lake Michigan Drive and 48th Avenue, shortly after 12 Midnight, on a report of two men in a vehicle that were armed. The two had an altercation with others in the area, and after pointing their guns at people, a shot was fired that hit an unoccupied business nearby off of Allen Park Drive.
Later that day, three residents along 24th Avenue in Tallmadge Township reported that bullets had struck their homes while they were inside, with nobody wounded as a result. It is believed that the two suspects were also involved in this separate incident.
Last Friday, the Ottawa County Prosecuting Attorney’s office issued warrants for the arrests of Leary and the teen on criminal counts stemming from the initial Allendale altercation. No charges have yet been filed on the Tallmadge matter.
While Leary posted the $3,000 bond following his arraignment before Hudsonville District Court Judge Judy Mulder, the teenage suspect is being housed in the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center.
The investigation into both incidents continues, and anyone with any information is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office or Ottawa County Silent Observer (877-887-4536).
