HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 7, 2025) – As the weather turns warmer, activity on local waterways have increased.
On Monday evening, crews from the Park Township Fire Department joined with members of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit for a couple of exercises at the Yacht Basin Marina in Lake Macatawa. They went through drills for a simulated fuel/dock fire, in which about 600 feet of fire hose went down the dock going to the fuel pumps, and with the Sheriff’s fire boat to go over its suppression capabilities.
A couple of weeks ago, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office hosted the 2025 Marine Training Academy, with classes at the county building on Holland’s North Side, as well as sessions in Lake Macatawa. Officers from a number of departments from across Michigan attended.
Meanwhile, the US Army Corps of Engineers has begun a series of harbor dredging operations along the Lakeshore. Contracting with Holland-based King Company, crews last month cleared out about 12,400 cubic yards of sediment from Holland Harbor, placing it on the bottom of Lake Michigan, in about eight to 12 feet of water, south of the harbor’s mouth. Similar efforts are slated this spring for the Grand Haven and St. Joseph harbors.
