SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 29, 2025) โ The dilemma between safety and fun on the waters of lakes and rivers that flow into Lake Michigan continues.
Boaters, water skiers, and water craft lovers enjoy zipping around Lake Macatawa, Kalamazoo Lake, and the Grand River, but for those who dock their boats in those waters, as well as those who have property along the shoreline, those speeding vessels can create all sorts of havoc.
Residents and stakeholders in the Saugatuck-Douglas-Saugatuck Township vicinity are being asked to complete an online survey that will help municipal leaders in those communities decide whether to make the entire Kalamazoo Lake as a no-wake zone, to just place restrictions on certain vessels, times for skimming the waters there, and whether current regulations are being adequately enforced.
Ottawa County Sheriff Eric DeBoer, who has had past experience with the officeโs Marine Unit in his background, admits that the merits of fun as opposed to safety are somewhat conflicting.
Audio PlayerA decision on no-wake regulations is expected later this spring.
