SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 28, 2025) – While efforts to make the radar tower atop of Mount Baldhead a new cellular phone service hub continue, the city of Saugatuck has other issues to address there.
During Monday evening’s biweekly business meeting, the City Council is expected to approve a proposed bid of nearly $300,000 from McGraw Construction of Grand Rapids to replace the restrooms at the city park that overlooks Oval Beach. City Manager Ryan Cummins, in his brief on the matter to council members, says that the facilities there are in “significant” need of replacement, and that the money for this project was included in the current budget. Saguatuck has worked with McGraw in the past, and this was the lowest of three bids that were not that far apart in price.
Over the past several years, the city and AT&T have been working on an effort to convert the radar tower at Mount Baldhead into an antenna for improved cellular phone and WiFi reception, but the status of the annex there as a historical site has led to bureaucratic red tape that has yet to be fully overcome.
Also during the meeting, council members will hear from Tony Schippa about a call for volunteers to support the HeartSafe Community Initiatives that aims to boost involvement in hands-free CPR training and other heart health awareness efforts.
The Saugatuck City Council’s 6:30 PM business session is in the second floor meeting room of Saugatuck City Hall (102 Butler St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
