OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 25, 2025) – Just as the spring weather has awakened the Holland area to the start of next weekend’s annual signature event – the Tulip Time Festival – the Ottawa County Parks system is also arising in earnest.
From Friday through Monday, the department will join with Grand Rapids’ John Ball Zoo and other “local partners” in the 10th West Michigan City Nature Challenge. This “BioBlitz” effort, tied in to Earth Day that was held on Thursday, challenges residents to take photos of plants, animals and fungi from where they live in Ottawa, Allegan, Kent and Barry counties, upload them to the iNaturalist smartphone app, and invite three people to join in this initiative. Ottawa County Parks will be holding special programs at Grand River, Pigeon Creek, Grand Ravines and Hemlock Crossing parks in conjunction with this nature challenge.
On Saturday, from 5-8 PM in the Nature Center at Hemlock Crossing Park, the Ottawa County Parks Foundation stages a “Art for the Parks” pop-up sale, through the Lakeshore Visual Arts Collective, as a fundraiser, with a cash bar, live music, and a food truck.
Finally, the free, eight-week-long, annual “Step it Up” fitness awareness program, which aims to have participants and groups explore the county’s parks system, begins on Tuesday. There will be weekly prize winners and more.
