ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 21, 2025) – After a six-month break, some demolition work in the city of Zeeland could resume shortly.
A moratorium on residential dwellings being torn down was implemented last November by the City Council, while the Planning Commission worked on reviewing existing ordinances and propose changes. During Monday night’s study session and subsequent business meeting, the governing panel will be asked to approve amendments that would require all demolition of structures be done by a licensed contractor, completed in a 30-day span, allow for administrative approval when a new structure that complies with city standards is proposed to replace the existing building, and establish other permitting and performance requirements.
Also during the study session and business meeting, Council will be asked to approve a $9,700 contract with DJ’s Landscape Management to help create the Hoogland Plaza, adjacent to the Splash Pad at the junction of Main Avenue and Elm Street downtown. It was the lowest of the six bids submitted for the project, and a total budget of around $14,300 comes in at more than a thousand dollars below the initial estimate. A naming ceremony is slated for later this summer to honor the long-time Mayor Les Hoogland who died last August at age 94.
The Zeeland City Council’s study session begins at 6:30 PM, ahead of the 7 PM business meeting, both in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
