WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 10, 2025) – Pete Hoekstra should soon be packing his bags from his Lakeshore home and heading out into another international diplomatic adventure.
Pending acceptance of his credential by the Canadian government, which is expected by the end of this month, the one-time Holland Congressman will become the new US Ambassador to Ottawa. The US Senate on Wednesday confirmed Hoekstra’s appointment by President Trump on a 60-37 vote, after a March 13th hearing in which he faced questions about the Trump Administration’s tariff stance, as well as comments from the President about Canada becoming the “51st State.”
Hoekstra, who served nine terms in the US House from 1993 to 2011, including several years as the House Intelligence Committee Chairman following the 9-11 incident in 2001, was the US Ambassador to the Netherlands for three years during the first Trump Administration. He most recently was the Michigan Republican Party Chairman during the 2022 election cycle, in which Mr. Trump won the state in the Presidential Election, and the Michigan House was the only state legislative chamber in the nation to flip to GOP control.
