OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 27, 2025) – The matter of “deep fakes” came to the surface nationally on Wednesday.
During the third hour of NBC-TV’s “Today” show, host Al Roker revealed that his likeness was used in a health-related, artificial intelligence-generated video that he himself had no part of. The video, posted on Facebook before being pulled by Meta, promoted a solution for hypertension, and the image claimed that he had suffered two heart attacks in the past, a claim that the real Roker has denied. Roker is the latest celebrity to have been scammed in this way, including Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey.
This “deep fake” goes to the heart of the #StopThinkVerify campaign, begun a year ago by the Ottawa Area Secure Schools Network, which brought awareness of this issue to Lakeshore students, according to Dr. Kyle Mayer, Superintendent of the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District.
