Mrs. Joyce Kortering, age 87, of Zeeland, passed away Saturday evening, March 22, after living with dementia for several years.
Formerly of Oakland, Joyce was known and loved for creating community through food. Joyce served with the Zeeland Schools food service staff for over twenty-five years. A charter member of Community Reformed Church, Joyce led their pig-in-the-blanket fundraisers, volunteered her time coordinating lunches for many funerals, and made the Wednesday Night Suppers for years. Her neighbors in the Royal Park Condominiums loved her garage get-togethers and holiday celebrations. Joyce would have marked her 88th birthday on Monday, March 24.
Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Ernest (Ernie) Kortering, her children Randy and Sue Kortering, Larry and Pat Kortering, Lisa and Jeff Gabier, and Richelle and Jon Hofman as well as grandchildren Stephanie and Carl Bussema, Matt and Christina Kortering, Katie and Adam Hukkala, Taylor Hofman, Brianna Hofman, and great-granddaughter Esther Kortering.
Joyce was preceded in death by her grandson Alexander (Alec) Gabier, as well as by her parents, John and Jennie Broekhuis, brother Alvin Broekhuis, sister Christal Broekhuis, sister and brother-in-law Grada and Henry Voetberg, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Leona and Laverne Kortering.
A funeral service in Joyceโs honor will be held at 10:30 am, on Friday, March 28, at Community Reformed Church, 10376 Felch Street, Zeeland, MI 49464. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm โ 7:00 pm, on Thursday, March 27 at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 South State Street, Zeeland, MI, 49464.
