HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 21, 2025) – The shipwreck discovery season on the Great Lakes is looming, while the season for telling such tales is underway.
Earlier this month, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society disclosed the discovery of the 300-foot steel steamer Western Reserve in Lake Superior, about 60 miles northwest of Whitefish Point. On Thursday, the Monroe County Museum presented the Howling Winds: Shipwrecks and a Few Tails program with local discoverer Ric Mixter talking about mascots on ships that were on vessels that survived storms on the Great Lakes.
On Saturday, the 25th annual Mysteries and Histories Beneath the Inland Seas show is held at Holland’s Knickerbocker Theatre by Craig Rich and his fellow members of the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association.
The MSRA program features guest speaker Ken Merryman, a noted shipwreck hunter from Duluth that help find the Pere Marquette 18 ferry that sank in 1910, as well as a presentation from Mixter. It begins at 7 PM, with an online link to more information here.
