LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 21, 2025) – Unemployment spiked along the Lakeshore and across the state in January.
In not seasonally adjusted numbers disclosed on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, the jobless rate in Ottawa County stood at 4.5 percent, and in Allegan County at 5.3 percent. Those levels were up six tenths and nine-tenths of a percentage point, respectively, from December, and you can add a full percentage point to those increases from what was seen in January of 2024.
Those trends were consistent with what was seen in Michigan, where regional rates rose on average of eight tenths of a percentage point for the first month of the new year. State officials said that labor market areas “demonstrated typical seasonal unemployment increases, along with the usual winter reduction in payroll jobs.”
