HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 20, 2025) – It seems as if a major housing and commercial project on Holland’s east side is eligible for some clean up funding.
During Wednesday evening’s biweekly Holland City Council meeting, unanimously approved a proposed Brownfield plan for the developers of the HoM Flats off of East 24th Street and Waverly Road. While the mixed-use residential and retail project, which includes 202 housing units, along with 13,000-plus square feet of commercial space, is supported by municipal payment in lieu of taxes and a service agreement, it has been discovered that there is contaminated soil that needs to be removed at a cost of nearly $800,000. This discovery came after the site was initially classified as a “greenfield.”
Mayor Nathan Bocks explained the difference.
Construction on this second HoM Flats project along the Lakeshore, coming at a cost of $60 million, is expected to be complete in time for the first residential tenants, a majority of which will be earning 80 percent or less of this area’s median income, to move in next year.
The Wednesday meeting was in Chambers at Holland City Hall (270 S. River Ave.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
