
Four from Hope College have been chosen as the MIAA Athletes of the Week: junior Liam Danitz in men’s indoor track and field, junior Carly Llewellyn in women’s lacrosse, junior Sara Schermerhorn in women’s indoor track and field, and freshman Hadley Krygier in women’s tennis.
Danitz (West Branch, Michigan / Ogemaw Heights HS) is the MIAA Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the third time this season and his career.
The exercise science major scored the most points in running events at the MIAA Championships on Saturday at Trine University.
Danitz broke last year’s record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.59 seconds, which is currently ranked fourth in the nation. Danitz finished runner-up in the 60-meter dash and the 4x400m relay (3:22.37). Danitz’s 60-meter time of 6.83 seconds is tied for 17th in the country.
Llewellyn (Spring Lake, Michigan / Spring Lake) is the MIAA Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week for the first time.
The defender registered career-highs in ground balls with four and caused turnovers with three during a 14-9, season-opening victory at Oberlin College (Ohio) on Friday.
Llewellyn, a business major, also contributed one caused turnover during a 16-8 loss at The College of Wooster (Ohio) on Saturday.
Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) is the MIAA Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the third time this season and the seventh time in her career.
On Saturday, the sprinter and exercise science major became the first MIAA runner to win the indoor 60-, 200- and 400-meter runs in the same championship meet. Schermerhorn also anchored Hope’s first-place 4×400 relay.
In the 200, Schermerhorn broke her MIAA meet record in the 200 by clocking a time of 24.91 seconds, the ninth-fastest run in the nation this season. In the 400, Schermerhorn also set a meet record in the 400 at 58.27 seconds, which is currently No. 1 in Division III. In the 60, Schermerhorn crossed the finish line at 7.77 seconds.
Krygier (White Lake, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) is the MIAA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for the first time.
Krygier served up four match victories for the 35th-ranked Flying Dutch last week during a 7-0 victory at Lake Forest College (Illinois) and a 5-2 victory at North Central College (Illinois).
