ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 3, 2025) – While all of the Lakeshore’s roads are now under seasonal weight restrictions, pothole season is also underway.
On Monday morning, the Allegan County Road Commission and the Michigan Department of Transportation joined the Ottawa County Road Commission in placing limits on weight and speed for vehicles carrying heavy loads, in an effort to ease the strain on paved roads as the ground beneath thaws from winter’s freeze. Such restrictions usually last four to six weeks, depending on how quickly the thaw occurs, and whether or not a final wintry blast comes.
In addition, the thaw leads to cracks on those roadways that crews will be repairing, and motorists will need to be aware of such rolling work, according to Allegan County Road Commission Managing Director Craig Atwood.
Any patching done now is meant to be temporary, with more permanent repairs, such as hot tar or pavement replacement, planned for warmer months.
