SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 24, 2025) – An update to the Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area Master Plan is before the Saugatuck City Council during Monday night’s biweekly business meeting.
The governing panel is being asked by City Manager Ryan Cummins to update the blueprint for maintaining the “sensitive natural and scenic resources” of the 173-acre site on the south side of the mouth of the Kalamazoo River as it flows into Lake Michigan. That master plan hasn’t been adjusted since it was initially approved 15 years ago, which created an endowment fund in conjunction with the Land Conservancy of West Michigan and the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area.
Justin Heslinga, Conservation Director with the Land Conservancy, is on board with Cummins’ proposal.
The proposed change will enable the city to access funds totaling nearly $822,000 for current Natural Area needs.
The Saugatuck City Council’s 6:30 PM business session is in the second floor meeting room of Saugatuck City Hall (102 Butler St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
