
Hope College’s Sara Schermerhorn and Austin Becksvoort have been chosen as MIAA Athletes of the Week.
Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West HS) is the MIAA Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the sixth time in her career.
Becksvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) is the MIAA Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for the first time this season and the second time in his career.
Schermerhorn clocked a converted time of 55.31 seconds last weekend during the Grand Valley State University Big Meet that is the fastest time in NCAA Division III this season.
The exercise science major also recorded Division III’s fastest women’s 400-meter run on an oversized track.
Schermerhorn also posted a 200-meter run of 25.21 at GVSU.
Becksvoort posted a combined 3-1 singles and doubles record over two road matches on Saturday.
The chemistry and chemical engineering major won his match at No. 5 singles against top-ranked Case Western Reserve University (Ohio), 6-4, 6-4, during the Flying Dutchmen’s 6-1 loss.
Becksvoort then helped Hope serve up a 5-2 victory at Oberlin College (Ohio) by partnering with sophomore Ned Curley (Plymouth, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) for a 6-4 victory at No 1 doubles and won his No. 5 singles flight, 0-6, 6-2, 6-0.
