ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 17, 2025) – It is never easy to replace a very successful coach in any sport, on any level, but Jeff Bolhouse is going to give it a try.
The long-time assistant to John Shillito at Zeeland West high was named on Monday as the school’s second-ever gridiron football coach, replacing Shillito, who announced his retirement in January following the fifth state championship for the Dux in his two decades at the helm. Bolhouse has been West’s junior varsity coach during that entire time, and the move is expected to keep most of Shillito’s staff intact.
Shillito racked up 185 wins since starting the program in 2005, and has picked up 339 coaching triumphs in his four-stop Hall of Fame career. His departure means that Saugatuck’s Bill Dunn becomes both the longest-serving and most successful current head football coach along the Lakeshore, with 140 wins in 22 seasons of guiding the Trailblazers.
