She was born on July 24, 1940, and lived a life devoted to faith, family, and service. Judy was a woman of deep faith, unwavering kindness, and boundless generosity. She lived out the words of Colossians 3:12, clothing herself “with compassion, humility, and gentleness” as she welcomed not only her own children into her home, but also foster children, international exchange students, neighbors, and friends. Her home was a reflection of her heart—always open, always warm, always filled with love.
Judy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roger Smeenge, and daughter, Julie Smeenge.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: Michael and Linda Smeenge, Todd and Ellen Smeenge, and Jeremy and Dody Smeenge. She also leaves behind her dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Bev Hop, as well as nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of loved ones whose lives were blessed by her presence.
A devoted member of Providence Church, Judy’s faith was the foundation of her life. She had a passion for music and used her voice through much of her life, singing in choirs and other vocal groups. She also had an adventurous spirit, finding fun and laughter in traveling – whether sleeping in a lumpy tent on the sand, making memories in an often broken-down motorhome, or enjoying the comforts of a bed and breakfast or the home of a dear friend she made the most of every adventure.
A celebration of Judy’s life will be held on Friday, February 14 at 3pm at Providence Christian Reformed Church of Holland, with a short visitation prior to the service (2:00pm). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Bethany Christian Services, Providence Church of Holland, or Holland Christian Schools.
