SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 26, 2025) – Addressing an issue that is inevitable is among the items before the Saugatuck City Council during its biweekly business meeting on Monday night.
Erosion has led to six locations, primarily along the boardwalk adjacent to Lake Kalamazoo and the Kalamazoo River, that need repair. In an effort to “ensure competitive pricing,” according to the city’s Public Works Superintendent Scott Herbert, the project will be presented for bids as a group – the street end of Francis and Water streets, the sea walls along the sidewalk at Wicks and Coghlin parks, the stairs near Griffith and Hoffman streets, the boat launch near Spear and Water streets, and where the Chain Ferry landings are on both sides of the river. The firm Fleis and Vandenbrink has submitted a bid of $17,200 to assist the city in this design engineering for the project, along with bidding assistance for sea wall and concrete repairs.
Other items before the governing panel include a proposal for an audit engagement of the city’s books over the next three years, as well as individual requests from property owners for adjustments to Saugatuck’s new hardscaping policy that prohibits decorative concrete, boulders, permanent planter pots, and fountains from being constructed in the right of way.
The Saugatuck City Council holds its business session in the second floor meeting room of Saugatuck City Hall (102 Butler St.), beginning at 6:30 PM. A link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
