HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 21, 2025) – The heavy hand of winter has the Lakeshore firmly in its grasp right now.
It’s one thing for all area K-12 schools to call a “snow day,” which has happened on Tuesday, but when Hope College and Grand Valley State University follow suit, weather conditions must surely be such that compels such actions. Hope, along with Grand Rapids Community College, have canceled all classes, while GVSU has switched to remote learning only.
The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids maintaining a winter weather advisory for Allegan and Ottawa counties through 1 AM on Wednesday, predicting up to four more inches of blowing and driving snow before it tapers off. The agency also has a cold weather advisory in place for the region through 12 Noon on Wednesday, for wind chills as low as 22 below forecast.
Local churches and non profits have opened up their buildings as warming centers in the Holland area, even though, as Jason Parks of Gateway Mission admits, it has been a challenge because there have been more people needing help even before this Arctic blast descended upon the Lakeshore.
In addition, MAX Transit has suspended all of its fixed route and on-demand Catch-a-MAX services for Tuesday.
Weather conditions will abate somewhat on Wednesday, but a warm up isn’t in the forecast until Saturday at the earliest.
Here is a list of warming centers that are slated to be open on Tuesday:
- Gateway Mission Men’s Center (166 S. River Ave.); Women & Children Center (356 Fairbanks Ave.) – Emergency Overnight Shelter open through 8 PM
- First United Methodist Church (57 W. 10th St.) – 6 PM to 9 AM
- Herrick District Library (300 S. River Ave.) – 9 AM to 9 PM
