ALLENDALE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 21, 2025) – A 19-year-old Allendale man may consider himself fortunate to escape serious injury when his automobile collided with a turning semi near the GVSU main campus, and his vehicle slid under the trailer.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jon Smoes, the incident shortly before 3 PM occurred on Lake Michigan drive near North Campus Drive, when the trucker, a 54-year-old Cedar Springs man, had entered a Michigan U-turn lane in order to head westbound on M-45. He apparently didn’t see the westbound car approaching, and the smaller vehicle went more than halfway underneath the semi’s trailer.
While the trucker was not hurt, the teen was taken to an undisclosed “Grand Rapids area hospital” for treatment of minor injuries. The westbound lanes were closed for a brief time in order to clear up the scene of the collision, which remains under investigation.
