ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 20, 2025) – One man was hospitalized and two others suffered bumps and bruises following a 15-vehicle pileup on I-196 east of Zeeland late on Monday morning.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong was among the deputies and other first responders who had to handle the mishap on eastbound I-196 at the 59 mile marker, between Zeeland and Hudsonville, around 11:30 AM. It appeared that blowing snow caused white out conditions, with near zero visibility, and led to not only the vehicles colliding with each other, but others which skidded into ditches, shoulders and the median to avoid being collected up in the wreckage.
While the eastbound lanes were blocked off for about four hours between the Byron Road and 32nd Avenue exits to clean up the mess, a 55-year-old Freeport man was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries suffered when his pickup truck slid under a semi truck’s trailer. The other two motorists who were hurt were treated at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
