Daniel Carl Krueger, loving husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa (papa), was born in Muskegon, Michigan on May 4, 1946 and died January 2, 2025. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Misty D’Anne Krueger and his parents John A.C. Krueger and Dorothy (Vos) Krueger and an influential person in his life, his aunt Henrietta Vos.
Dan wanted to be a history teacher at an early age. He attended Hope College where he received a B.A. degree and an M.A. degree from Michigan State University. He taught U.S. History at West Ottawa High School and served the last year there as an Assistant Principal. In 1978, he was selected to be the Ottawa County Clerk, an elected position, and served in that position until 2014. From 2012-2014 he also held the position of Register of Deeds. It was estimated that he signed over 90,000 birth certificates during the time he served as County Clerk. During his terms in office, he served on multiple committees including: County Administration Committee, County Management Information Committee, Ottawa County Computer Committee, Justice Users Committee, State Registration Review Committee, the State Voting Certification Committee (appointed by the Director of Elections), a Voter File Advisory Committee and a Blue Ribbon Elections Advisory Committee (both appointed by the Secretary of State), he also chaired and founded a State-wide Optical Scan User Committee. He also served in many organizations including the United County Officers Association (UCOA) as President and Legislative Chair and the Michigan Association of County Clerks (MACC) as President and Legislative Committee. He was honored as the Michigan County Clerk of the Year by his peers and by the MSU Continuing Education Department where he served as an instructor.
In 1979-1987, Dan served on the Holland Community Hospital Board and was Board Chair from 1984-1987.
Dan is survived by his wife Nancy (Dornbos) Krueger, his daughters Heather Krueger (Muskegon) and Daniele Dykens (Holland), his grandchildren Jared Krueger (Lexington, KY), Daniel (Olivia) Dykens, Adam Dykens, Drew (Elise) Dykens (all of Holland) and great granddaughter Alessi Goddard-Dykens and one expected in March that he was saddened he would not be able to hold. His brothers Charles (Sherry) Krueger (Holland), James (Cherie) Krueger (Rockford, IL) and Richard (MaryAnn) Krueger (Livonia, MI). His aunt Carla Ryan of Holland. His in-laws George (JoAnn) Dornbos (Muskegon), Sandra (John) Van Dyken(Chicago, IL), Judith (Stan) Sikkenga (Muskegon), Peggy (David) Poynter(Roscommon, MI) and Sally (Doug) Scott (Whitehall, MI) as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are planned for Thursday, January 9th, at 1:00pm, at the Dykstra Funeral Home (Northwood Chapel), 295 Douglas Avenue, Holland. Reverend Jim Lankheet officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00am – 12:45pm prior to the service. A private burial will be held following the funeral ceremony.
