HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 29, 2024) – An overnight chase on Sunday morning that began near Hudsonville ended at the eastern edge of Holland with a crash and an arrest.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong, a deputy on patrol along I-196, shortly after 2 AM, spotted a dark-colored sports car heading west with no apparent license plate displayed. When the deputy turned on his lights to effect a traffic stop, the sports car sped to speeds of over 100 miles per hour, so the prospective chase ended there, but other law enforcement entities were alerted to the situation and was asked to look out for the suspect vehicle.
A short time later, a Zeeland Police sergeant spotted the sports car on westbound Business 196, and again the suspect vehicle sped up to over 100 miles per hour, but this time, the chase was on. Sheriff’s vehicles, as well as Holland Department of Public Safety vehicles, converged at the junction of the trunk road and 120th Avenue/Waverly Road and boxed the sports car in. The suspect then stopped the vehicle, put it into reverse, and tried to escape the situation by ramming a deputy’s prowl car, without success. No injuries were reported.
An arrest was then effected, with the unnamed suspect taken into the Ottawa County Jail on an initial fleeing and eluding charge, along with a count of assaulting a police officer. Further charges may be forthcoming as the investigation into the incident continues.
