HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 6, 2024) – Tis the season to be jolly…and to be aware of real life Grinches.
State Attorney General Dana Nessel last week urged Michiganders to protect themselves against porch pirates this holiday season, for packages are “easy targets” for thieves.
Such thievery is nothing really new, according to Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker.
Nessel says planning ahead is vital to make sure your gifts and packages stay safe, including installing a porch camera, creating the illusion someone is home, and keeping your porch well-lit.
Baker says that some online retailers are helping on this.
Nessel also suggests secure delivery options such as Amazon lockers and FedEx offices, or possibly having the package delivered to you at work.
The threat of theft continues for conventional brick and mortar shoppers, says Baker.
Of course, the integrity of deliverers must also be taken into account. Last week in south Los Angeles, surveillance video showed a UPS driver apparently ripping open a bag outside of a home and stuffing an Apple Watch that was inside into his pocket. The bag was found a short distance away in a neighbor’s garbage. The driver was apparently apprehended, and UPS confirmed that the man “no longer works for the company.”
