ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 4, 2024) – It a baptism by fire – or perhaps, more appropriately, by snow – for Zeeland’s newly installed snowmelt system.
The last vestiges of work this year on installing a $3.6 million system along Main Avenue from State Street to the Community Restaurant had literally just been completed when the flakes starting falling last Wednesday night. There were some hiccups, according to Mayor Kevin Klynstra.
It took about a year and a half to install the snowmelt in Zeeland, with the city handling most of the installation costs through unbudgeted personal property tax reimbursements payments from the state that had totaled more than five million dollars since 2018. Property owners where the system was installed will be taxed nine dollars per square foot of snowmelted area for incremental costs, along with an annual levy of between 50 cents and a dollar per square foot for operational and maintenance costs.
