A Hope College men’s swimmer and women’s diver have been chosen as MIAA Athletes of the Week: freshman Luke Newcomb and fifth-year senior Molly Leonard.
Newcomb (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton HS) is the MIAA Men’s Swimming Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.
Newcomb eclipsed the 25-year old school record of Josh Boss ’99 on Friday at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invite in Gambier, Ohio — a meet that features five of the top 20 Division III programs in the country as well as ranked NAIA and Division II schools.
The NCAA B-cut time of 54.54 from the 100 breast prelims is Division III’s third-fastest this season and topped the former national record of 50.69 that Boss set.
Newcomb leads the MIAA in the 100 and 200 breaststroke this season.
Leonard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) is the MIAA Women’s Diving Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career.
The mathematics major finished fifth on the 3-meter board at the Kenyon invite with a personal-best total of 371.78 points.
Leonard took seventh on the 1-meter board (330.13).
